D. T. SUZUKI

I am on a staircase.
I meet myself
going
the other way.
we are both afraid.
neither of us says hello.

I am global warming.

I am weapons
of mass destruction.
I am enriched
uranium.
I am the child
hiding
under the desk.
I am the thousand
bulbs
of a chandelier.

I am global warming.

I am the name
I must not whisper
in my sleep;
I am the one
who hears
the whisper.
I am a command
shouted
by Hitler;
I am the stitcher
of lampshades.

I am global warming.

I am the skin
of Joan of Arc.
I am lunch
at the inquisition.
I am the second death
of Lazarus.
I am the ram
slain
by Abraham.

I am global warming.

I am walking
the frozen lake
like an addict,
like a pilgrim;
I reach
the far shore
and turn
to look back
at the far shore.

I am global warming.
I am global warming.
I am global warming.
I am global warming.
