There was a time back long ago
when mermaids sang of love
and the enraptured sea
listened attentively.

Now gone those most unusual times
that rolled the feelings near
and drew from out a mermaid’s eyes
the tears of great desire.

Emotion now can’t find the rock
on which that mermaid preens
and every day the search in vain
by the sea’s most restless waves.

The mermaid hasn’t disappeared;
she’s simply far away
a searcher now of all her dreams
where love comes easily.

And the sea in restless roll and roar
remembers and believes
too weak to climb the rocks in time…
chases mermaids from a mind.

But passers by tread carefully
between the rocks you’ll maybe find
the feel of that one mermaid’s dreams
will change the minds of you and me!
