I am trying to forget you
Radio hums
High of 108 in Aruba.  I’m thinking
How sweet and my tongue melts
As my beard drips and my breaths choke
And a heavy hand wipes sweat from my eyes.
My coat sticks fast
To my t-shirt and my salted slimy lips
Are fat and red.

I remember October,
Flapping scarves, you with your thin fingers
Clutching your hat to your head,
Laughing as I grabbed your coat
And kept it from escaping.

Our fingers
made lace and were more than enough
to cover ourselves from the wind.

We can’t ever walk fast enough to get warm, can we?
You asked me that autumn,
Your black coat clasped around your chest.

How can I smile, now, hearing your ghost
And reeling under this heat?

Ten years.  In just ten years
My beard has blushed white
My cheeks reach toward my shoulders
My eyes are tight
And my eyebrows are grey, thick rags.

I’m a sand farmer now,
Pushing bags across beaches,

While hundreds of bundled bees
With bags bulging
And heads down
Scurry past,

Crossing the sweat-covered sidewalks,
Breaths hot from their mouths.

You must be at home
Back in October,
Back under the waning sun—
I remember—but do you
While you walk against the wind?

Child of the Stars,

This is rather well done.  The line:

"My cheeks reach toward my shoulders"

made me laugh, which is a good thing.
