.

The general level
In conversation is as usual
With an acquired respect
For what isn’t said

There’s bread and cheese
Beer and wine
A great deal of simply milling around
Country music on a radio playing loud

At these extended family gatherings
There’s a certain amount of civil gaiety
That always controls the moods

Then eventually it’s time
To bring in the chairs
As fireflies begin to glow
Above the lawn

Even the children
Are tired and ready for bed
With dishes of food
Wrapped in plastic and aluminum foil
Everyone turns for their cars

It was a fine
Kind way to spend the day
Only you weren’t there

.

How can you just touch human feelings like this accuracy?!!!

everyone with a lost one will be like this. every single one will be like this. Kathy is feeling just like this today. and all the families with lost ones in the war, in the shooting, will know the feelings. I know  it too.

Your poems have a power to shake people's  emotions.

Huan,

Ah I can just see it now.  We used to have those same gatherings when I was young.  You constructed this so vividly.  Awesome job!

This goes straight to my heart... in part because our family reunion would have been next week... but we've lost so many, we're losing that, too.

John

I have been a quiet fan of your poetry for some time now.  Honestly, I haven't written as anything I thought to say simply sounded shallow to me.  But, this poem really got to me.  It hit the old heart strings.  I have been in those gatherings - as a child and an adult.  It's like you took a photograph of family gatherings all over the world and put it to words.  Sometimes, I feel lonely in the crowd when I don't see the right face.

Anyway, thank you for the words, the poems and the 'word photographs' you share with us all.

Alison

Thank you all,

Especially you Alison; it's always
good to hear from those in the shadows.

Thanks again

John
