Riding the Greyhound
(Naked Before You)

Big gray dog pulled out on time,
turned the corner,
went up the ramp,
straightened out
and settled in for a long ride.

Long,
because I’d never held the day empty before,
never spent one feeling so totally alone –
or so it seemed.

I’d stepped into a briar patch last night –
you were teeth and claws,
needle sharp words pricking me everywhere,
as if I was naked before you,
asking to bleed. It was more
than I chose to accept –

So big gray dog and me
are covering some ground,
piling up the miles,
heading . . . somewhere,
anywhere,
as long as it’s away, because

some words can’t be undone.
Their memory festers beneath the skin
like some seeds,
planted,
rot when the life in them
goes the other way.

I couldn’t stay.

But my heart did –

so big gray dog and me
we formed a bond.
I’d let him pick the roads,
and me, I’d sit in the back.

Alone.

And cry in tune
with the hum of his wheels.

Stunning!!! I'm glad this isn't about you... but the tingle in old scars reminds me it has been me... and I'm sure... so many others. And you've captured it brilliantly!

I know this pristine formality well...emotional moments in pouring rain...
you do utterly take me to a place of great saddness...your writing is fantastic

Oh my goodness, this is fantastic.  The hurt in it is palpable, and the choice of language goes straight to the heart. The images are easily seen, and experienced. Well done.  Well done, indeed.

this knows me...or at least it used to, a long time ago.

This is reallllllllllly good, j.

You captured that quality of going "anywhere"--and once upon a time, this girl loved a bus--window seat--just me alone with my thoughts and the scenery...

oh you make me yearn to go.

Anywhere.

It's great to read you again m'friend.

(I even love the greasy spoon stops too.)

And yep. I dread the "talkers" too--so, earphones, sunglasses, book, and a scowl.

I like to be alone on those rides.

I loved all of this, especially the greyhound being pictured as a big gray dog.
