You wouldn’t think with such a gaze
Captured as she turns her head
You were in the presence of such a craze
That could put the fear in any god
Trusting pets cats and dogs
As well as poor servants so in need
As to be in our employ

It’s a stupid look .  .  .
You find it in almost every photograph
In gilded frames with ivory stands
On parlor pianos in curtained living rooms
Among the pathetic curios they always buy

There’s a lot of money being made
These days creating images that are not true
Either generally or in particular
To the subject of the pose

Still she isn’t as a rule
Unkind to those she doesn’t know
Unless that moment’s ineptitude  
Puts her in the mood
