Foggy Lines

Last eveningís cloudy skies
came down to kiss the earth this morning,
my open window letting in the cool, gray tendrils
of deeply dense, thick fog sounds of far away birds.

For a moment I am home again,
Kansas is but a dream, having disappeared,
my beloved coastline hugging me chilly,
and in a flash, Dadís fresh coffee
will tickle my nose

while knowing mother will snuggle
five more minutes under warm covers
for she never was a morning person.

I will not attempt faux curls, but instead
plait my hair this morning, allowing
the mist to set waves for
an eveningís brush of lush strands
under loving hands,

and soon enough, I will make hurry up sounds
to brother and sister for their breakfast,
as my hands fill reused brown bags
with bread, butter, and mother's
thick strawberry jam.

Outside, these foggy lines of morning
swirl to me scents of grass and new leaves,
with salt in the air, becoming a masque
that I head into,

face first

on my way back
to Kansas.

the fog, no matter where it is, always takes me home too.

"and in a flash, Dadís fresh coffee
will tickle my nose"

my dad always got up very early and I knew he was up when I smelled the coffee...there was something very comforting about it. That and vanilla pipe tobacco. I still look for my dad when I smell that, no matter where I am.

~sighing~ Touching this screen just so, I am transported...to that coastal fog for a quick misty sip.
Well done, lady Sunshine.

Beautifully written Sunshine, I can just imagine the scene unfolding as you describe it but also i was transported back into the places of my childhood. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Dear Sissie...Isn't it wonderful how traveling to those lovely memories can be brought in by something so gray as fog?  You took me there with you, not just to the place, but to the loving feeling.  Thank you!

those moments between sleep and being awake, when the mind recalls images and times from our past.  Those precious moments, where those we have lost are still here, and all is as it was.  I loved the whole feeling of this.

What comfort good memories bring and how well you have described your own.  Only today someone said to me to go back to a very special moment in my childhood and I actually couldn't remember one. Perhaps the second childhood has over-shadowed them.

oh I love this, the fog always makes me remember my little one...we live on the top edge of the cliff right above the river valley, and most times the fog does not reach us, choosing to remain down lower, but this morning, it was all the way up to envelope our yard as well, and I woke him up to see it...he looked out at the fog...and then back at me, and said, "do you like the fog grandma?" and I said ...of course..."yes I do" and he said "well if you like the fog, then I will like it too"
and so the fog...never fails to make me smile...
was good reading this, though I almost felt as if clicking red heels together would make it come true....

cavalcade of comments by such a fine array of
'P.I.P.-world' poets about this write!; ergo,
I shall just add:

Excellent!

Bring on the coffee smell...I remember the smell of it as I lay in bed early in the moring...didn't like coffee back then...thought it was yuck!

Now though...I love coffee...love the smell of my memory, succinctly brought back by you...

thanks, my friend...thoroughly enjoyed..
