Next morning,
Felix is shocked awake
by a searing pain
across his bare shoulders.

The man is standing over him,
with a thick leather belt in his hand.

Felix tries to roll up in a ball
to protect his body as best he can.

The man grabs his right wrist,
and lifts him up off the cot.

“Get up and get dressed,
you lazy little tramp,
you have work to do.”

The man pushes Felix
down the green stairs,
and into the kitchen.

There is a girl there,
at the sink washing dishes.

Felix is set to work beside her,
drying the dishes.

“Who you?”

“Felix”

“Oh yeah,
I heard you brought in last night.
You were crying.
You won’t like it here.”

“Who you?”

“Sally.
I’ve been here forever.
You won’t like it here.”

“Yeah—
I think you’re right.”

Oh, this aches!
It highlights the dirtiest side of a 'social' (dis)order which perpetuates (by acceptance) any structured social system of indentured servants(think slaves) and treats other humans as Less-thans.
Bravo! for speaking out for those who may be too afraid to whisper against this indignity and injustice.

Ok, so I'm getting the poems into my thought process backwards, but it still works.

Perhaps had I read this one first,
I would have been more in tune with the one I replied to, first.

Duh.

This hearkens back to the time of Dickens, or even later, perhaps, to the children of the Orphan trains.

Well done, Robert!

Sunshine,

Thanks again for the kind words.  As an older man of seventy, I hope I look back on these tales of long dead friends with a clear eye.

Pain fills heart and soul as the vision of your words opens to my view....The worst of it is that there are still people who treat others in this same way today...Powerful words that give voice to the forgotten...Well said...

A dramatic and vividly descriptive vignette that packs a punch right into the solar plexus of this reader!

Might I also add that I concur with the astute comments written before mine!
