Easter, 1907

The week of Easter
one hundred years ago
saw a very early spring, when
green wheat fields welcomed daffodils,
farmers smiled, and robins
caught fat, fat worms.

The tiding of blessings
was seen and felt in smiles, from greetings,
as kith and kin prepared their native
celebration of life foodstuffs as the week
progressed.

In some houses, silver was polished,
fine chairs and tables rubbed with oils,
parasols dusted, boots polished.
In other homes, grandmother’s lace tablecloth
was removed from its tissue coverings,
aired, and pressed.

Bibles were brought up to date with winter’s passings
now that the newspapers came in from the east
and family members, remembered.

In most houses, Sunday’s best trousers,
suit coats and dresses were brushed and mended,
with special thoughts toward a very special
Person, in order that they come to Him,
in His honor.

Blessings of grace were memorized by the
youngest, their special gift
to end Lent, to begin, again.

And then, in Saline County, Kansas, a light
drifting of snow began around noon.
Unexpected by city dwellers, the farmers stood,
looked to the skies, lifted their shoulders,
massaged their elbows, nodded, and fed the
horses extra hay and meal.  No wind.  Yet.

The snow fell, and continued to fall.  An inch an hour.
City dwellers stayed within, confused, and delighted,
as the trees with young spring green leaves
felt the blanket of icy lace.

Later in the afternoon, the winds began,
and the blizzard took over.

One hundred years later, memories begin again.

You took me there Karilea..
I felt I was reading something akin to
Sarah Plain & Tall.
A beautiful work of art this.
The detail, the imagery...wonderful

Excuse me whilst I dust off my parasol.

Happy Easter to you and yours~Nancy

For it was not into my ear you whispered
But into my heart..
It was not my lips you kissed
But my soul.

We are suppose to have some snow this weekend, too. Needless to say, with all of the rain we got, my few little flowers are all gone.

Dear Sissie...it's a wonder how you are able to go there with your words and take us along.  The photo, now?  No doubt what took you back to thinking of a time so long ago.  The clouds here are dry.

Lovely poem...Happy Easter!

Dear Karilea, you have a special touch when it comes to yesterday! I loved to live those moments while reading your beautiful evocative poem.

Snow and flowers are a fascinating combination, that picture of yours shows it.

Love,
Margherita
