There is a coop, a coop in the corner of the yard.
It is home to sterile chickens,
no longer able to spew forth our Sunday scramble,
now relegated to the rafters.

There is a coop, a coop in the corner of the yard.
It houses roosters mean as pit bulls;
Their faded red combs shriveled, and drooping,
like the testes of an old man.

There is a coop, a coop in the corner of the yard.
It’s female peacocks stunningly drab,
like the bleached colors of an Andrew Wyeth landscape.

There is a coop, a coop in the corner of the yard.
It’s male peacocks strut and fan;
blocking the way of their female counterparts;
grotesque in their effeminate vanity, brilliant in their glory.

There is a coop, a coop in the corner of the yard;
with forgotten ducks so still,
they could pass for huntsmen’s decoys,
wooden and floating.

There is a coop;
A coop in the corner of the yard,
where the coyotes come at night to torture themselves.
They howl and yip and gnash their teeth in frustration;
the goodies inside, separated from them only by a thin wrapper of chicken wire,
making the morsels inside seem all the more tantalizing to the foul breathed scavengers.

Little do they know, that were they to extract and feast upon those delicacies,
they would simply be swallowing tough, forgotten dust and biting claws,
followed by a dessert of echoing peacock screams.

Just goes to show the coyotes haven't met many peacocks.  Or they'd stay away from that coop that seems to lurk in your yard.   I like this poem.
