why walk, asked the man with no braces
why talk, asked he who had no tongue
why see, said those who hid their faces

and so the scribe turns pages filled with dust
deciding if he may, wondering if he must

why run, said she who had just begun
why stand, cried they who had no legs
why laugh, he moaned as if done

and so the scribe turns pages filled with dust
deciding if he may, wondering if he must

long faces, empty thoughts, somber sobriety
as words like spillway waters lose
their soon uttered, oft mistaken jewelry

and shining lights of scrivener’s tools
puddle in ambiguity…
why, asked he who topped the summit rules,
why, he cried, ‘tis simply done, for sake of being free

John, you are exactly right...wasn't satisfied with the last line...must have changed it a dozen times...finally got fed up and surrendered to the rhyme scheme...should have stuck with a similar line to the one you suggested...far better for the continuity of the idea...
