If a flower or a feather falls off, keep moving.
Someone will pick it up for you.

~ cotillion etiquette director, The Club

in miles of white lace
pumps
flowers
yes and feathers
from unknown birds
we marched
our young knees
festooned with unwrinkled skin
hands and heads held high
afraid we would fall on our crème de la crème noses
when we curtsied

someone
…we cared not who
picked up the dropped feathers and flowers
we never missed

we danced
lighter on our feet for the lost adornments
breasts heaving
smiles held firm
our breaths spring drafts
cooling the faces
of sweet young men
so willing to answer the call
hold us at the waist

after
we traipsed dew marked grass
trailing wet lace and youth
never looking back
sure
that someone would pick them up

now
we keep a close eye
on every flower and feather
every scrap of white lace
every hope of youth
hold them tight

for now
…there is no one to pick them up

well.

There is me.

This made me smile so, because I have the habit of doing just such things.

I have a box of rocks and feathers, and I know the story of every one--I pick up beads and I used to pick up bottle caps. I still do, because well they are rare now that they have invented the pop top.

But I talk too much.

Your cotillion is lovely--and you have made me yearn for one of those lovely hand fans too. And a mimosa.

Thanks for playing Lady--I'm finding this shoe thing fascinating m'self.

you don't talk too much
but you make me
I think it was the shoe poem about your sister
that inspired this

but you inspire me a lot

I think I need to develop a shoe poem...
for all that I have seen,
are the loveliest glassed slipper of
sweet memories...

our Nancy's shoe challenge
was a stroke of creative genius
and has caused much inspiration
and so many memories

I would love to read your shoe poem Karilea...

Reminds me of the Mardi Gras Balls and the Debutante Balls that occur here down south every year. Unfortunately I was never one of those fortunate young men chosen to attend. Nice imagery Milady.

I haven't seen Nancy's shoe challenge, but now that I've read two shoe stories I am intrigued! Maybe I can kick my shoes off this weekend and set some sole thoughts free!
Lace, feathers, ballet shoes, heaving busts....I'm grinning at a memory of my own now.
thanks for the smiles

Even if one has never been to a cotillion, this surely has much meaning.  My cotillion, I think, was my 8th grade dance...lol!  Or, perhaps it was my first homecoming dance.  Anyway, those were the days.....but now, it is as you say, and I savor every memory I can find.   ....jo

Wow...I'm smiling this morning!
Actually it was Serenity who challenged me to put my shoes to a poem.
Then to dance in them on YouTube!
Serenity and I challenged all Pip members to write about shoes.

I love this!!
Hugs to you!

Sweet Kate... I do declare, in truth, you do know how to charm and turn a southern boy's head. I would be most proudly honored to pen your dance card with my name and to cherish the glory of whirling on the dance floor with you. I am sure that as your flowing skirts gave the illusion of our floating on clouds I would be, while in your presence, momentarily the envy of every beau at the ball and have the eye of every southern belle. For that vision, I am truly grateful and ever your servant.
