.

Sure
I knew there were wolves
There always are

The pastures are no greener
And certainly not safer
On the other side

Yet I didn’t stray . . . I ran away
As fast as my feet could carry me

Let it said I had an epiphany . . .
What with seeing
My brothers and sisters
Up on hooks in the marketplace
As we were yesterday
Herded through town

But being born and bred
Unskilled to a submissive attitude
It surely would have been the miracle
If the dice had rolled and found me free

So here I am
Again in the bleating line
With that temple terrified Judas
Leading us on

Still no one can say
I didn’t try

.

Wowzer, John -- you wrote ME in this one! When I wrote my poem of the same title, I was trying to "take the viewpoint" of the sheep....but in this -- I AM that sheep!

Ya humble me, fella....ya do.
