It's not the typical tourist approach to the theater,
up a back alley and dog leg to the right.
Gang symbols and other graffiti ugly the view.
City filth litters the way with syringes and condoms
scattered among the bottles and beer cans.

It all has a dangerous feel about it,
for the solitary walker
seeking a different view of history.
But no one is around...
There is a silent squalor in the alleyway courtyard
where once were rows of stables.

I watch the stage door awhile where
a handsome man in a black moustache
burst out late one April night.
Limping from an injured leg, he mounts a dark horse
and, kicking the stable boy aside,
he whirls and thunders down the alley
heading south...
The cries of a nation echoing behind.

What a wonderful, gritty path you take us on... far better than the brief glimpse down a street that the tour buses give!

Oh wow.  Gritty, and then the realization of where you are.  Now that's something I'd like to see, and I never thought about it.  I always thought about the monuments and buildings.

Nan (Pilgrim variety)
