Memories of Youth “1962”
By Paul Wilson

Friday morning shake
awakens me from slumber
Voice of mother breaks the silence
          “Get up time for school”
Disgruntled
chill of water in face does the trick
asking mom
“where’s my books”
Sugar Pops floating in ocean of white
will hold me till lunch

Third hour
I need a break
          “ A smoke between bells “
Don’t get caught
folks will give me hell…
three days off
grounded for the weekend
you know the drill

Sliding in hallways
on feet of cotton
being cool with my friends
          “Showing off for the girls”
lunch hour almost done

Someone left the water on
Hallways are flooded
Principal comes on intercom
Announcement made
“school will let out early today”
Have a good weekend
see you back on Monday

Sign on door says
Friday night dance
after football game
“Ask mom for a couple of dollars”
grass will have to be cut Saturday
she say’s

Slow dancing with the girls
Favorite one will be there
Brush your teeth take a bath
comb your hair
Swipe a little
Old Spice
from your dad

Wow...a lot of memories here Paul.

Those were the days m'friend....

Oh Paullie, I really liked this--here I yam, holding out my own white bowl:

"Please, sir, can I have some more?"

I was born in 1961... and on reading this, realized that school hadn't changed much when I got there. I can relate to your memories, but when my teenaged nieces talk about school now, I think "What??"  I like your version much better than theirs....
