Freedom’s Chains

Where have I been, what have I done,
what have I lost, what have I won.
I do not really care at all,
unless my back’s against a wall.
For I am happy to be free
and do whatever pleases me.

Some people are not free at all
and live their lives against a wall.
No hope in life for them you see,
by circumstance, they can’t be free.
Suppressed by things they can’t control,
their life becomes hell’s darkest hole.

If you think freedom is a choice,
try saying this without a voice.
Where death awaits if you cry out
and you mourn friends who tried to shout.
This is the place some have their home,
where freedom has no place to roam.

I’ll not define these captive’s chains
for they all come by many names.
The things that most all think are free
are not all what they seem to be.
For others may not have a choice…
                    deprived of liberty and voice.

The moment created this second, is a  moment that's going to last.
It lives the full spectrum of time, the future, the present and past.

Your voice rings strong and your message is clear.  I give thanks often that I live in a country where I can speak and write freely - and where I have the ability to choose.

Thank you, Ivor.  I am one of your staunchest fans!

Alison,

thank you for responding, freedom has a price and that means living by rules.  It's who makes and enforces the rules that is the problem....

Your "voice" cries true.
A thought provoking read.

Beautifully said Ivor.  But we become captive in many ways other than the obvious.

Slaving over a job we hate, but need to survive...freedom from an abusive spouse women stay with, for the "sake of the children"...freedom from ignorance because we can't read or write and think we're "too old to learn" etc., etc., etc.!! The list goes on.

There is a tee shirt my son gave my grandson when he was having a problem in math class saying "JUST DO IT!!"  How true!!

Well done, poet. For those who have no chance to voice dissent without the threat of torture or death, there is no such thing as freedom.
