Do you know me?
I'm that raggedy hollowed eyed
man you pass every day, the one
you edge around at the corner.
Do you see this medal?
I got this for the shrapnel
I carry around in my back.
You see, I threw myself on
my buddy during some incoming
mortar rounds.
They choppered me out...
...two days later he died
I wasn't there to protect him
anymore.
Every day I'm haunted by
his smiling eyes.

Do you know me?
I'm that slutty teenage girl
the one you always comment on.
You know, about how my
jeans are too tight
and my shirt too low cut.
Yeah and I wear too much make up.
Did you know that during the day
I go to school
but at night I'm out here
on this corner...yeah...but it
feeds my sisters at home
and keeps them safe.

Do you know me?
I'm that rowdy boy
the one with too much time
and money on my hands.
Fast cars, drugs, alcohol
I got it all...
...everything but a mom
and a dad who care.
See its just easier to give
me things, that way they
don't have to pay attention
to me...you wrecked the car?
Here's a new one? You
got arrested again? Call the lawyer.
Everything but what I really need.

Do you know me?
Do you care?

Do you know me?
Yes….no….
Sometimes you have to cross the line to live in this world…
Sometimes your stuck in your own world…
Sometimes sometimes becomes your world…

Thanks Paula
Great writing!…made me see that my world is not as tough
as others may have it and I need to lend a hand to others
sometimes.

I have missed you, dear lady.  But you haven't lost your zing, thank goodness!  I never qualified for some of these, [well, perhaps as a teen, I might have thought so, but reality bit!] but I know many a person who can step right into your poem and wear it well.

And that's the sad part of it all.

We all know a lot of me's out there.

This is really fine writing Paula.
The Spirit is strong in you.
It is particularly relevant here in South Auckland New Zealand where I live. It's the equivalent of the Bronx. Gangs, prostitutes, violence....you name it we have it here.
Thank you for writing this.....and yes I do know people such as you describe and yes I do care.
Keep up the good work!

What a needed reminder.  I recently came back from San Francisco and I saw so many who were "invisible". One old man was a delight as he approached me for money -- he was gallant and sincere.  I went back to give him money when I got some but he was gone.  I felt a link to him .. as if I knew him.  I wanted to know him and hear his story.
