THE LAST PRAYER

The mighty waves engulf me, they are driving from the West,
Like a thundering leviathan, ice-cold from trough to crest.
A howling savage haunts me, and he cuts me like a knife;
It’s the demon wind of satan... on the ocean of my life.

Beyond the water’s roaring, I can hear the seabird’s cry
High above the seething rollers, where the foaming  horses fly.
With the salted echoes rising ‘gainst the current’s tidal race
I’m confronting my mortality... it stares me in the face.

How those  breakers rise in majesty, and run before the storm!
With  agate-like lucidity in ever changing form.
Their anger is an entity, it’s like a thing possessed
That knows no bounds of time or space, nor any place to rest.

Now their  fury is upon me - a tsunami bearing down
In a massive wall of water, with its white-topped speckled crown.
And its undertow is taking me to where there’s no return
I shall drown without forgiveness... then I’ll go to hell...and burn.

Then I see Him... like a vision, as my lifetime flashes by
To the keening of the devil’s breath... a caustic lullaby.
In His eyes, there was forgiveness, there was Heaven in His smile,
He had given me completeness... He had made it all worthwhile.

The promise Jesus gave to me, it’s with me at the end
He was always part of my life and forever my best friend.
So I whisper... in my last prayer... e’er my beating heart shall sleep;
Jesus... save me! ...from the ever pounding forces of the deep.

It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

Rod, this was an amazing write... not sure if you remember or not last May when the fishing trawler sank off Bluff - my little cousin was one of the 9 year olds lost... tragic event... I'm sure the good Lord was by his side during this time though...  thank you for posting this.   RDB

Be kind at heart....for everyone you meet has their own battle to fight.........
