February’s April Fool

Yesterday, giggling was heard
as joggers stretched their hams
in shorts

while children swung
on retired swings
that matched their squeals
with rustic sounds

Canadian birds headed north
honking some ancient delight

some red-headed mercury
sought a height in February,
unannounced

and no one walked the ice-step shuffle

~*~

as if it were April 1, the clock turned
as did tide and temp, and
wind unkempt, whipped a snap
grabbed a hem
caused a cough
became unstemmed
whirled ‘round ankles
shivering timbers

geese U-turned
smiles were gone
runners ran, with long johns on

winter returns

a cruel joke of some February shuffle
all bets are off

How I do wish those geese would keep heading north!
I take it you were lucky enough to have a touch of spring in Kansas?
It just can't seem to arrive soon enough this year.
Hugging you for this lovely.

In the midst of winter,
I found there lives within me..
An invincible summer.
