atop the ridge that guards the verdant plain
a sandhill crane
in silent watch surveys the bluestemmed prairie
ever wary
of the night, the dark and shadowed night
of coyote's bite
the Kansas wind blows ever hard and ever strong
in nature's long
seeking out of midnight's lone and sad refrain
the moonless plain
when suddenly into the black and shadowed night
crane's sudden flight

Very well done, indeed!

Poet, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.
