My cup of Tea

I’d rather have tea than coffee to drink,
when I am asked, I just don’t have to think.
It’s one of the things I ‘decide’ everyday,
or is it, let’s see, is it really that way?

I feel habits form, then they get in the way,
the fact we don’t think, makes our choices each day.
Surely things change, and we never should say
we’ve decided for ever what game we will play.

Religion, our taste buds, our politics, ‘name’,
I’ve made up my mind, they will all stay the same.
It saves me from thinking and gives me no pain,
not having to dwell on these things once again.

Should I keep repeating, ‘that’s what I believe’,
or consider new options by things I perceive?
It may mean more often, I have to ‘decide’,
which path I should take, or which way I should  ride.

I’m certain that this will make me quite unsure,
just where I am going if I reach a new door.
I was happy to go just where I’d been before,
why should I change then, I’m sure of my floor.

The reason I know, is that no man decides,
the true way for me, it must feel right inside.
My habits were forcing me, so was my pride,
to continue, just ‘one way’ on my mindless ride.

I guess in the future a new man you’ll see.
I hope he’s much wiser, and better than me.
I must get that drink now, ‘a nice cup of tea’?
No… I’ll sample the coffee and set my soul free!

Change is good...
and some habits can be
simply wonderful.

It comes down to
a matter of choice,

and which wave to ride this day.

Ivor, I usually read all you write. I find you very interesting and you always get your thoughts across. I am of an age that it is too easy to just continue on the way I have. I have always been open minded so that is okay. But just yesterday I was talking with a little younger co worker and friend and she thinks I am nuts to continue to pay my bills by snail mail and to even keep receipts. She uses the computer and pays all on the internet. Then throws away the bills as the bank or company she is dealing with have it all on their intent sites. I feel it so much easier to keep one book and have it all in front of me instead of going from one account to another on the internet. There are some things I just do not want to change.
Best to you, martyjo

Lady in White

Like most of my poetry, this one revolves around considering choices.  I do agree that some habits are good and bring comfort, especially my cup of tea, which is why I chose this for the theme of considering things different.

But they can be a problem to discovering new things or ways, like you say it is all about choices... as long as we are prepared to make them.

nice to know that somebody agrees with me entirely, I seem to spend my life as the odd one out!

Firstly it is so refreshing to hear you say that you read a lot of my work.  One problem I have with this site is that there is no indication of how many people 'read' your post, as there is on another site I sometimes post on.  It can be soul destroying to see a post sit with no replies not knowing if it has been read.  As we have not the time to respond to everything it would be nice for everyone to know how many might have looked in on their work.

Now to your story about bill paying, you hae looked at the alternatives and decided what is best for you.  Not traveling the accepted route but considering which way to go is what life is all about and I admire those who do not always follow the pack.

Thank you all again for responding, I have another poem I wrote while on holiday in France that concerns tea, I may post it tonight. (trouble is I wrote a lot on that holiday and it may lead to me boring you with further!)

Have Fun,

Ivor

We humans are indeed, creatures of habit! ~ and that can be so limiting!

I'm a tea lover as well! But I have branched out and sip the occasional coffee and I thoroughly enjoy it!

We miss out on so much when we are set in our ways. Instead of living a finite life, I am living one of infinite possibilities!

As per usual, I enjoyed reading your poetic food for thoughts!

I’m poetically bad and I know it
Don’t think of myself as a poet
But life is so strange
That I relish the change
So there is no way I forgo it

The latest of my new fangled tricks
Is eating for months with chopsticks
Of course it’s not new
For both me and you
But the diets a bit of a fix

I started to loose so much weight
Maybe from the stuff that I ate
Noodles and rice
Everything nice
Ahh but not one scrap of fat on my plate

There is one thing I must do the same
Then no girls will ever complain
With no magic lotions
Or incarnate potions
I tell you it works all the same

You see I am really so good
Self praise is misunderstood
It’s not just a boast
Mine heart is the host
So often you find they are wood

So pardon my answer in rhyme
I know It get’s worse all the time
I don’t post it on site
Cause most of it’s trite
So easy to tell thats it's mine

Coffee, Tea or...???

Having lived so long...I can absolutley attest to the fact that things are going to change whether we like it or not!

However, there ARE somethings we can control...we have freedom of choice.  But the older I get...the more I find myself abandoning old habits and making new choices without really thinking about it.

You...of course...will apreciate the fact that after my husband died, without conciously being aware of it,I began picking up some of his habits that I didn't particulary like!  We had different tastes in music, literature, tv newscasters, programs, comments etc. Even ways of doing things around the house. Now when I stop to think about it, I guess he's having the last laugh!

Go figure...I guess we CAN pull strings from the beyond!

Ivor, I tend to do a lot of reading on my late hours at work. As I work midnight to 8 a.m. I can read but they frown on it. Once in a while like right now I am reading before the change of shift. Taking a chance on posting.I do that once in a while too as I say, I hate to follow the pack. Just call me one wild woman. As bad as I get LOL martyjo

Linda, Eric, Bea, LA, Lee,

Sorry for the late response to thank you for your most welcome comments (possibly except for Eric's - but he's strange).

I love to play on little things and turn them into 'THE MEANING OF LIFE', but Tea is sacred and needs to be taken seriously....

PS.

Eric's never been the same since he found poetry!
