Giving Thanks!

At the beginning of each of the Four Seasons grandmother cleaned the house, there were four days of ceremony and everything was smudged inside and out as she called the spirits near.
In small clay bowls sage burned at each corner of the house and land, the children were given turkey feathers to wave the evil spirits away singing softly of sweet blessings.
Sacred tobacco was offered to the Seven directions at the dawning of each of the four days,a fire of Oak was kept burning it was the childrens duty even through the night.
only fruits and corn was eaten there could be no meats,no shoes were worn the old ones were gifted to the fire,we must come humbly to reconnect us to our Mother Earth.
Prayers of thanksgiving were sung all day and night showing respect to our Creator we were truly grateful for  all we had,to us the gift of life was precious even though it was hard.
I remember my feet freezing sticking to the icy ground, yet I never once thought to complain even as a child my heart was thankful grandmother taught us well.
Asking only what was needed to keep us safe and in good health, promising to work harder and reaching out to offer help to any who were in need.
All the kin would come then to grandmothers fire from near and far,for a sacred gather a great celebration,a cleansing of our hearts!

Sigi PassingShadows, generation,to generation we continue,we are connected to our Mother Earth. This is the way of knowing my place in this life,my duties to self, family,Nation,Clan. To make sure the next generations do not forget who and what they are!
