2 a.m.
the frozen lake
the spinning earth –
how can there be
no wind

a shooting star
is flicked
like a cigarette butt
from a sky
full of tail lights

while back
among the trees
so still
they are unaware
of themselves,
the bed
in the cabin
is warm
but empty
though you know
exactly
how many miles
you are
from another bed

and while you wonder
which of you
will die first,
both of you practise
being alone

you fall
asleep:
shooting stars
are tossed
from car windows;
cigarette butts
fall
from the sky;
time
is on fire

Thank you for sharing this one with us.

In the midst of winter,
I found there lives within me..
An invincible summer.

Oh my goodness gracious.  The first part of this one is such a novel, fully-visualised image that I thought that was what the poem was about.  And then you hit me with the whammy.  Practise being alone.  How great that is.
I think I've discovered another favorite poet.

this is really good...love the very powerful stanza

"and while you wonder
which of you
will die first,
both of you practise
being alone"

hauntingly introspective...loved it
