.

The winter sea
Heaves heavily
Under a mantle of broken ice
And snow

Flags in the harbor
Limply flutter from their poles
As if lacking the will to move

Atop the hill
Couples gather at a theater
After the usual meals
For yet another forgettable show

Some same refrain
About adventure and love
That hardly seems relevant
Anymore

What birds there are
Shiver alone
Under wooden eaves
Or on leafless trees
Starved for a little food

One would be glad
To pull a cover
Completely over his head
And sleep through it all
If he could

.

You write desolation well, my friend....a bit too well, because that bespeaks experience with it, and I wish that weren't so.
