Maddie Jie Jie Yuan Yuan Lienn Fan
is a year older

in her native costume
she will address us perfectly
first in Mandarin
then in English

beloved grandmothers
grandfather
and parents
in this
the sixth of my milk years
I speak and read Spanglishese
Mandarin
Spanish and English
grandfather says I can say
I don’t want that
equally well in either language
he says my Chinese characters are a delight
music teacher says the violin sings for me
dance teacher says I grace the pirouette
I hope I have pleased you

in the spring
my mother will bring a new baby
to charm us
I will become
older sister

Maddie’s father will stand
his hand on his wife’s shoulder
we will all smile broadly as the
source of true light finishes her speech

we grandmothers
our brows furrowed
will mutter softly
hu hu hu
silly fish
do not worry about this spring child
you will always be Yuan Yuan
first number one child
born in the first month

and yet
tiny empress
feels her crown slipping
even as she purses
red lips
to blow out her sixth year candle

______

Maddie will be joined
by a baby brother in April

She will make a beautiful, and wise, older sister.  Her charm speaks for itself.  Now, don't you be losing any buttons, y'hear?

This dear Lady shows your wonderful heart.
This little one is charming.

In the midst of winter,
I found there lives within me..
An invincible summer.
