A Toast to Absent Friends

I seem to be raising a glass
More frequently these days
To absent friends and loved ones
As I remember our yesterdays
One by one they silently
Stole away to their destiny
Gathering together, I’m sure
As they patiently wait for me
There are several vacant chairs
In the places where we’d meet
Like the empty places in my heart
Still mourning with each beat

Each one left a legacy
One different from the rest
Some left fame and fortune
Others were not so blest
But the love we had for each other
Is what I remember best
And those of us who remain
Fighting back the tears that stem
Place an empty glass at the table
And turn it down for them

Rest in peace my comrades
Until we meet again

A most beautiful toast to those friends gone before.
I'll raise my glass to this one Bea.

I found there lives within me..
An invincible summer.

Ahh Beatrice such a nice poem to your friends. I am certainly learning about losing people dear to me the older I get. Did a nice job on your rhyming. Blest is a nice transitive verb. A simple word that shows your skiils. Loved the poem im sure your friends are smiling down from heaven on this write ~Bill

Bea

Being a comparative youngster I can only imagine the number of friends you have had the pleasure of knowing.  I certainly have a lot who have taken their next journey before mine.

"Each one left a legacy
One different from the rest"

All individuals, all leaving differing memories and parts of themselves with me, all very close but absent in the physical sense.

"Like the empty places in my heart
Still mourning with each beat "

Your poetry , once again, brings these friends closer.......

The moment created this second, is a  moment that's going to last.
It lives the full spectrum of time, the future, the present and past.

when life makes us experience this part, it is not easy dear lady and I always try to remember, how fortunate I was to have known them and learned from them....

Bravo for a very well written tribute.

I sure did idenify with this one unfortunately.  I suppose we will all agree with the words in this poem soon or later.  Nice tribute to those gone.

Very well written.

Here is a toast I learned when young:

"It is a simple truth;
all things and people
one day meet
their own and separate ends;
so in this sad dark hour,
stand with me
to greet the reaper,
and raise a glass
to absent friends."

I know just how you feel. I was thinking of one just last night, who has been gone since 2003. I miss her so much.
