ABSINTHE

I was loved at first and then decried
But apparently they all have lied
My kiss of green touches your soul
When I am poured into a bowl
By many artists I'm consumed
't Was not my fault that they were doomed
I was for many an inspiration
Though for some only temptation
Too much love will end in hate
And for long that was my fate
The hour ticked the sand away
Until the truth came through one day
I'm not as bad as they believed
And yes, it's true, I am relieved
Yet I must warn you all the same
Embracing me will make you lame
But when you kiss my lips in gentle touch
I'll promise you heaven, but not too much

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Absinthe was a popular drink, especially among artists, in the 19th century. It was forbidden though in the whole of Europe, from the beginning of the 20th century, because they thought it would arouse psycho-active effects which could lead to horrible deeds (murder). Only recently they discovered that these effects only rise with such a high dose, which will not be reached by normal consumption and that most effects were caused by some addings, such as copper sulphate. The prohibition ended in The Netherlands only as recent as 2005.
I'm thinking that it was van Gogh and his artistic friends, and some who possibly hadn't met him, but Dega, Gaugain, Toulouse-Latrec, Manet, Picasso, etc., who enjoyed chasing that "little green fairy".  It does make one wonder...especially when Picasso lived to be 92, and was said to have enjoyed absinthe very much.
But I think I'll decline to something a little lighter...even if the green fairy seems to wink at us all.
thank you for the history lesson, m'dear!
Sunshine, you're so right, it was Van Gogh who loved the stuff a little bit too much. LOL
trutodaraiders- what's the Absinthe-botanical powder used for?
James, thank you.
Remarkable! A poem from the view of a liquor...I love it! (the poem - not the liquor)
I had a date with that lovely lady once and she took my breath away....alomg with my sanity, lunch and conscienciousness. I've had blind dates - but not one that would make you blind! Look what she did to Picasso!!!!
Sorry, lady. You may be potent but you create impotency. I'll pass.....
Love the poem!
This was wonderful..The last line was my favorite..."I'll promise you heaven, but not too much.." Great stuff.
It's used for improving gallbladder, liver, gastric and vascular disorders, as well as migraine headaches, and it helps increase appetite
