HOLY, HOLY, IS THE LAMB!

I WILL FOLLOW YOU WHEREVER YOU GO!

I WILL NOT LOOSE FAITH!

I'M GONNA TAKE A STAND!

THE WORLD CAN SAY WHAT THEY WANT,

BUT I WILL NOT BE MOVED!

I WILL STAND ON THE WORD OF GOD,

FOR EVERYTHING YOU SAY IS THE TRUTH!

I don't see this as a poem. It seems to be a personal prayer. It does not use figurative language or original symbols. It does not express new connections found in a poet's perspective.
Although I do not share your theistic sentiments, I do respect poetic expression of such sentiments as found in the works of
Bliss Carman, Leonard Cohen, William Wordsworth, and William Blake.
I don't mean to offend, but this seems more like preaching or prayer than poetry.

shirtless,

to be fair, Hebrew poetry was often like this.  Ever read the Psalms?  They are not known for their subtlety.

And yet ... they were rich in imagery and metaphor also.  So I kind of agree with you, and yet think that you should go easy on criticism here.  Poetry typically changes over the years, with practice, and new thoughts.

By the way, put your shirt on.

Oh, and I loved the "Jesus comes home from Kindergarten" poem on your website.

Stephen.

God is love and also the truth?  confusing as it is, it's beyond us and that's about all I know.
