Flooded Fields

The flooded fields that look like lakes,
Alarm us, but to geese, each makes
A perfect place to land and float,
While they groom their feathered coat.
Sometimes swans will come and stay
As though they've waited for the day.
It always comes as a surprise
To see them dropping from the skies
Just at the time the waters flow
Across the countryside from snow
That's melting high in hills above.
It's obvious the wild fowl love
These resting spots, but they don't tarry.
They must know they're temporary!

Lovely poem of early spring.  When I went back to North Dakota a few years ago, I was shocked to find water covering the farm land that my dad had so digently cared for.  In my day those fields were dry and calling for moisture.  The waters have come to stay and the wildlife is thriving.  Love, Joyce

Dear Joyce:  Thanks for commenting. We seem to get more field water here every year. Of course we are close to the lake and have creeks on two sides of us. The weather has changed a great deal though, since we moved here. We have Canadian geese nesting behind our yard the last four years.

Dear Betty Lou

Your poetry never disappoints me as you verse so well.

No flooded fields where I live; only a creek behind.  The purple swamp hens, ibis and other wildlife come daily.

Love Verbena xo

Dear Verbena:

I would love to see a purple swamp hen!! We have lots of wildlife but nothing so exotic!
Thanks for your nice remarks.
