“For Aunty”

Up in the attic, tucked away,
I found a dusty box today.
I was surprised to see within,
Old photographs of kith and kin.
But mostly children, I discerned
And there was not much to be learned.
Very few had a notation,
Indicating the relation.
They were charming, every one.
Someone’s daughter, someone’s son,
All caught in perfect imagery
And showing how they used to be.
Girls wore large ribbons in their hair.
The boys, wore such a manly stare.
Their dresses trimmed with flounce and lace.
Every curl hung in its place.
High buttoned shoes and slippers too,
But there are smiles on just a few.
Most are sober and even sad
And there’s one picture of a lad
That says:“For Aunty”.Aunty who?
I stare at it and wish I knew.
There are three sets of twins I see,
But who they are, a mystery
And even though they have no name,
I’m going to keep them just the same.
I’ll make a large, collage display
And let them see the light of day.
They are too sweet to hide away!

What a great idea for these old unnamed pictures.  I have some of those too that I haven't had the heart to dispose of.  Very touching Betty.  Love, Joyce

Dear Joyce: Thanks for reading. I couldn't bear to throw those pictures out even though I don't know who they are. Such sweet looking children, it's a shame no one wrote their names and ages on the back of each print.

Well-penned. Should thou and they meet in the by-and-by, perhaps to share a well-meant chuckle and a sigh, one will say to you, "Photograghs are a funny thing. Thank you for saving them. Perhaps someday a few of those might help someone---such as a poet, a very high calling!"

easy1:  Thank you for commenting. I never have found the names or histories of any of the children, whose pictures I saved, but many people have enjoyed looking at them over the years.

Charming write Betty Lou. If the many boxes of pictures I have outlive my children people will wonder the same thing. I best make a notation on the back of each.....but there are so many. Oh well, winter is coming and it will help pass the time.
Love,
Marcia

Dear Marcia:  I never could discover who the children are in the pictures I found. Too many people gone, who might have known.
I hope you have better luck with yours. Thanks for commenting.

Dear Betty Lou

It is good to put names to faces when taking photos.  However, in the 'old days' they did not do that.  My sisters have many photos of our relatives dating back to the early thirties, forties, fifties and even sixties. I hadn't a clue who they were. It was like looking into the eyes of strangers.

I love your poem by the way.

Love Verbena xo

Dear Verbena:  It always seems sad to me that no one took the time to put a person's name on the back of a photo. Especially a child.
