When Winter Came

When winter came and froze the pond,
My family was very fond,
Of donning skates and venturing
Out on the ice and we would bring
Some lanterns we could later light,
So we could skate into the night.
Sometimes the neighbors would come by.
We'd have such fun, the time would fly!
Some of us played "crack the whip."
If you were at the very tip,
You usually lost the holding hand,
To fly across the ice and land
Upon the banks of snow that lay
Along the edges.There you'd stay
To catch your breath and watch the scene,
Not dreaming then what it would mean
In later years when you were grown
And had a family of your own.
When we were finished, we would go
Into the house for hot cocoa
And how we'd cup our hands around
The heated mugs. The toast was browned
To just the right degree of tan
While bacon sizzling in a pan
Sent its aroma everywhere
Throughout the rooms and we would share
A time of camaraderie
Around the family Christmas tree!

What a delightful poem of winter, full of rich imagery that stirs memories of winters long ago for me.  Good flow of thought and good ending. Thanks for sharing.

Betty Lou,

I could hear the laughter and shrieks of happy children.  Thank you for this poem -- it read like a Grandma Moses' painting.  You shared comfort and memories and I love that in your writing.

A lovely picture well painted.

Very enjoyable.
