The Orchard This house has been abandoned many years. I pass it every time I go to town. The upper window looks as if it peers Between the limbs of trees, now winter brown. The orchard always flowers every spring. The trees don't know their owner is away, So they invite the birds to come and sing And bring forth all their sweet fruit anyway. I go there for some apples in the fall. The reddest ones are always up too high. I pick a few for sauce and pies, that's all And leave the rest for poorer folks than I. And by the time the rains have turned to sleet, No fruit is on the bough or on the ground. What people haven't carted off to eat, Wild creatures have come quietly, and found! Betty Lou Hebert |

Very nice, Betty. We built our home 40 years ago on the old homestead and the old house had been abandoned for years. Lots of old fruit trees and the animals had the bounty all to themselves. Joyce |

Betty Lou~ I enjoyed your poem very much. Both the musical quality of the words and the scenes they created in my mind's eye. I am partial to old houses, even those deserted long ago and always wonder who lived and loved behind the walls, what stories could they tell. Very gentle spirit in your words~ ~Lou |

My wifes great great grandfather brought a cutting from Ireland, back in about 1830 and grafted it to a apple tree here in Ontario ... it's a yellow apple and makes the most wonderful pies ... when our generation is gone, I fear it will just be a forgotten scrub tree on a fence line or cut down  who knows the histories or sentiments of the things that make up our landscapes |

Dear Betty Lou I love old homes regardless of whether they are abandoned or not. They have so much character to them. You verse so well that I felt like I was looking out of the abandon houses' window and looking onto that apple orchard. I felt a little sad too! Love Verbena xo |
