a mutual unmentioned impulse
the night alive with thaw
so nearly warm
that a passing breeze unbidden
brings a vision of unhoped-for
hyacinthine spring

emerging into the caress of drifting air
an illusion of a new season
a relief from
the stale, recycled atmosphere
left just behind

for a hushed moment the
sounds of traffic
the murmur of flowing water
all seems illusive
a rarefied prolongation of the
music to which we have long
craved to dance

a cab yawns to the curb
drifting off like a boat
on a labyrinthine sea
lost among inchoate night masses
waves like great buildings

she turns her face up
her eyes gleaming ripples
in the white lake of her face
the shadow of her hair a
pervasive intimate dusk
a cool beauty in the damp breeze

she lies entwined
resting, caught a
gossamer feather
drifting in and out of
the half light
