Who can say with certainty
that this sweet love will last
that it won’t end in shambles
a dark figment of our past

these days with you are precious
the best days of my life
filled with joyful promise
devoid of common strife

yet fate is a complex creature
deception is his style
he lulls you into peaceful bliss
and then reveals his guile

are we two impregnable
a fortress against the tide
or are we quite susceptible
to the trials that we must ride

who can say with certainty
I’m not one to boldly bluff
I can but try my best in this
and pray it is enough
