Hey all, I'm new around here, so try to be gentle.I don't remember when I did this (a few months ago at least), but I thought 'what the hell', and so here it is.Like to hear what a few of you think.

To go into the darkness,
Not quietly, but with a roar,
To spit defiance in the face of destiny
And with strengths last flow,
To heave upon one’s self
The weight of Justice,
Truth and Righteousness,
To resist until no breath remains,
To uphold till the last heart beats
And falling into darkness, let nothing remain,
Save the echo’s of our last feat.

nv sailor, welcome to corner pub #3. your poem stimulated a selfish reflection of my past but i believe that is what you are seeking..."our thoughts".

as a child, i entered darkness with a roar because i was fearful of the unknown. the noise gave me false courage. as i matured, i entered darkness quietly and saw it as a wilderness to be studied. darkness was my ignorance and knowledge became my light.

in time, i was conditioned to believe in truth, justice and the american way. the belief gave purpose to my life. however, to force the american way upon other cultures to satisfy the lifestyle of a capitalistic hierarchy has become unacceptable to me because it takes from the dignity of others. in the end we defeat ourselves because they reject us and reduce the situation into an eternal conflict with no resolve, except the death of a nation's human resources. i can no longer be a horseman of death. i am too old. therefore, i am...but, an echo!

Hey everyone, thanks for your replies.  They're very encouraging.

r v woo :  That is a very insightful and meaningful interpertation of my piece.  I'm afraid that you give me too much credit for depth of thought though, and  I fear that I must disagree with your political inferences (I'm a veteran, and I feel differently about America), but I greatly appreciate your commentary, and of course you are correct, I was seeking your thoughts.

Joyce : I'm glad you enjoyed it.  I don't know about 'skillfully penned' though, I was past three sheets and heading into four to the wind when I blundered this out.

Angel101¢¾! : Thanks, I appreciate that. ; )

Some of my best work came when I was drunk out of my tree.

It was a really good poem.

For you it seems a drunken gift also... or is it a curse?  ;-)

Welcome to the board.

nv, no problem on my part with the disagreement of perspectives. that is one of the perks of living in a democracy, right?
the fight for freedom is a noble cause...always has been and always will be a part of my belief system! i agree to disagree...a major problem, however, is not all of the other 7 billion people on the face of the earth see it that way...and that forces my country to make decisions...i only hope the cause is noble.

Yes Sailor.  I suppose that is why your poem reminded me of Dylan Thomas's "Do Not Go Gently Into That Dark Night."    Joyce
