Weary is the wanderer who travels far
In search of the dream just out of reach
Just over the next rise it must surely be
See that rainbow there; just there

So many years now gone by in vain
The faces run together as in a dream
The places, so many places, faded
Distant memories of another life

Bone weary now of the hapless quest
The muddled mind desires only peace
Blessed peace; restful respite from
The failed trial of foolish youth

A youth whose strength of purpose
So clear then in brighter times
Has managed to capture only
Freedom in the bottle of cloudy defeat

Older yet wiser now the steps retrace
Back to the beginning, back to the roots
Slowly along a trail dimly remembered
The wanderer trudges toward home

Home to the life he should have had
Lo, those many years ago
Home to that which he knew so well
Home to finally heal a wounded soul.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

pegasus:  Very moving poem!  Unfotunately there is not always "home" to go back to, or if there is, the years have made so many changes, it is not the place you left!

i really liked the whole thing, but these were my favorite lines

So no more hiding all your pain, you deserve a new start. That's why i'm closing myself away, this is a message from your heart.

It would nice to be able to climb into a time capsule and go back, but then we would long for what we would be leaving right now.  Moving piece.  Joyce

Nothing constructive,I'm afraid - I liked this very much.

It spoke to me on a very personal level, describing a journey of my own with lyrical poignancy.

thomas wolfe realized an important aspect about life and change and that we can never go home again...i know...i tried...can't live in the past...if we can't adapt then there is no future...never the less i'm still somewhat of a romantic with memory recall. enjoyed your poem!

The journey is better than the destination methinks....
