Lost In The Badlands

Being lost out in the badlands,
Is a scary thing you know.
It didn't help that I'd been told
It was no place that I should go.
I didn't mean to disobey,
But I had a brand new pup
And when he chased a rabbit,
I just ran to pick him up.

He kept right on running though,
Although I called a lot
And by the time he stopped, I found
We were both worn out and hot.
I looked around and didn't see
One single thing I knew.
I sat right down and pondered
What was the best to do.

Dark shadows on the rocky walls
Looked like long, jagged claws.
Or giant teeth that you would see
Inside a grizzlys jaws.
We huddled there, the pup and I
To watch each ebbing ray
And just as tears began to fall,
Came a noise from far away.

It perked me up and made me shout.
I knew it was my dad
And when he rode up to us,
I could tell he wasn't mad!
When we got home, my mother
Just sent me off to bed.
I lay there and I heard them talk.
My father sadly said:

"You know Maureen, she is your child.
Not something I found in the wild!"
My mother snorted and replied:
"If she'd been lost, I'd not have cried!
I never wanted her you know.
I tried and tried to tell you so!"
So, you can see, I've always known
That people too, are made of stone!

Dear Barb:

This was a flash-back memory. Decided writing about it would be good therapy!

Thanks for caring and you are right, I have a very loving family.

Oh Betty, how sad.  I hope this didn't really happen.  Have you missed me?  My computer crashed about two weeks ago.
I just got a new one today and everything is so strange.  They did retrieve my writings from the old one however.  I was so happy to find my poems again.  Today was my birthday and I am too tired to compose.  Love, Joyce

this made me ache inside.  No child should ever have to hear something like that.  I am glad that you decided to write about it for therapy purposes.  Writing can be such a welcome healer.  Hugs to you friend.

Alison:  Thanks for your caring response. I thought I'd left all the sadness behind but once in awhile it re-surfaces.  I've had a very good life in spite of a rocky beginning!

Ahh, Betty, it would seem we are kinderd spirits, you and I. Know that you are also loved and admired here, among your friends.

By chance I came to read here today and found your sad story. I always liked your writing and now I see you hold love and forgiveness in your heart. It is what makes you who you are and that is good.  It is strange how these memories arise from time to time to haunt one. Like an old sliver that we thought went away but works it's way to the surface from time to time to cause rememberence of that old sting. Peace to you, latearrival

latearrival:  Thank you very much for your kind words. You're so right about sad memories and how they sometiems surface, even though we are not consciously thinking about that incident. Just part of life I guess!

Betty Lou...A heart tugging story indeed.
All children need love in their lives especially from both parents. Hopefully time has eased the pain a little...Paul

Hi Paul:  This was a long time ago and I was reconciled to the circumstances by the time I was a twelve or so. I haven't let it alter the direction my life has taken.
Thanks for your kind remarks.

Simply beautiful and well told. Full of emotion. I tend to favor poems I can directly relate to, This one will be added to my favorites.

Dear Betty,  This made me so sad reading it again.  I can't fathom that such a lovely person as you had sucha heart breaking experience.  Know that you are deeply loved and more than that you have known deep love for your own children.  Love, Joyce

Dear Joyce:  Thank you so much for your kind words and for caring. I knew I would never have anything in the way of love from my mother, by the time I was 10 years old. But, I have a very loving family and friends and I had a wonderful father.  He died at an early age however.  I have a wonderful relationship with my own daughter and that means everything.
