Jessie, Storekeeper

She would be eighty-three next spring
And knew what passing years can bring.
Her country store had space behind
Where she could live and didn't mind
Working through the day's long hours.
Every spring, she planted flowers
To make her place look light and gay.
A ranger lived five miles away.
There was a pretty campground though,
Much closer, where the willows grow.

In summer months, the campers came
And she made sure they knew her name.
Fall brought the hunters after deer,
But winter days were long and drear.
She then had lots of time to dream
And wonder at life's personal scheme.
When she came here she was a wife.
Though they had known their share of strife,
Both labored hard to build this place.
She missed the sight of his dear face
And mused on how long it would be,
Before she kept him company!

A winter came worse than the rest.
Men headed for her;did their best,
But nature had turned merciless
And it was near a month, I guess,
Before a rescue could arrive.
They didn't think she'd be alive,
But when they called, she replied
And welcomed them, with joy, inside.
She'd burned some things for lack of wood
And eaten anything she could.
Her stores were low at season's end
But she had learned just how to fend!

We knew her through one summer's days.
Enjoyed her wit and charming ways,
But those who went into her store,
Had better be quite sure before,
They read her sign, which made it clear,
"No shirts, no shoes, no service here!!"

This is the kind of person we hope to meet someday, but alas, they are few and far between. Thanks for sharing one with the rest of us.
