It Was an Ordinary Day

It was an ordinary day
After weekend of some rest and play.
No reason to be filled with dread;
No inkling of that which was ahead.

Some studied and some greeted friends,
No omens and no dire portends.
No reason then to wonder why
Some would live on as others die.

Their beloved campus glowed with life,
Without a hint of coming strife.
Until that shot and ricochet
It was an ordinary day.

Lulled by the interlude of peace
The students laughed with fear's release.
Until the shots rang out again
And fellow students cried with pain.

They knew without a single doubt
Madness and mayhem were about.
They ran to safety from the sound;
They were the prey, he was the hound.

Thirty-two precious lives were lost;
Their loved ones left to bear the cost.
Before such evil came to stay
It was an ordinary day.

Dear Joyce:

This is such a moving poem and so true. It did seem like an ordinary day, I'm sure before the horror started. I guess that is always the way in most cases! Excellent write!

Nicely expressed poem, Joyce. It was just an ordinary day with nothing unusual happening until I came home and turned the news on. And then for days we can't stop asking "why?"

Thanks for the write. R.I.P. the victims and some comfort, somehow, to their loved ones. May God grant good recovery to those injured and in need, too. Hopefully the law (now) proposed to get violence-related mental illness records into the firearms background check database will move forward quickly.

Very touching Joyce.

Maybe it's a time to kick the royal derriere of Big Brother and take our faith and our children back out of the heavy-handedness of the Government.

What a sad state of affairs...

Poems like this are very good, in all things we always simply take for granted that such things will never happen to us? No matter how carefully we live life they can and will if it’s deemed.

We just need to remind the globe continually and maybe make the world a nicer place for all to live in the process.

You’ve a fine talent indeed, clearly blessed  in relaying such thoughts well in reaching many hearts.

A gripping piece dear friend. A tragic waste of lives to madness.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Nicely written. It brought some thoughts for those who are left and suffered the loss.

My thoughts on this tragedy were so jumbled when it first happened and even now I have a hard time with it. But for the grace of God go....
Your words are very eloquent and heartfelt. Excellent write.
