One more hour to go and then it’s time to lock up,
shove away all those heavy folders, and batches of papers,
the memo pads, and to-do-lists,
let the phone ring, and never answer it.

I open a mental cabinet where I have relegated
last-minute decisions to be made:
Shall I call a friend and meet her for drinks and talk?
Shall we just go listen to a concert or jazz?

My brain yearns for some form of unzipping –
slip off my shoulder pads and loosen up,
stare at chilled vodka slugging over chunks of ice,
a second shot misting up the glass and my mind.

My choice is made:
If I hurry I can catch a taxi,
drive past traffic towards the bay walk
lose myself among a crowd of strollers.

I barely make it to the edge of sea
to watch the last blaze of sunlight
turn rufous orange - a dose of magic
enough to infuse me with a sense of order.

What bliss to melt in anonymity
with all the nameless faces around me,
smell the scent of the sea,
feel gentle zephyrs flip my hair across my face.

Memory is a traitor – how easy to close my eyes,
forget to seek answers to life’s problems.
All I have now, right here, is my imagination
simplifying complexities and giving a careless nod to fate.

Oh the feel of Friday and blessed release from duties.  You did a magnificent job of describing your freedom.  Joyce

Thanks, guys.  I'm sort of retired now and this is sort of reminiscing.

we all need to find ways to unwind and unload the stress. this was a delightful description of your choice.nicely done.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost
