Writer of the Wilderness

Three miners sat around their camp.
The weather dismal, cold and damp.
They realized their venture, bold,
Had not resulted in the gold
They'd dreamed about, back in the spring.
Now the winds of autumn bring
A vision of the winter here.
If they're to last until next year,
They need to build a cabin and
Hunt for food to keep on hand.
They hate to stop their daily chore,
But know their need is something more
Compelling, than their drive to share
The gold they're sure is waiting there!

So then to logging, they begin.
One man went out to bring back in
The staples necessary to
See the Alaskan winter through.
Once they were inside, looking out,
With snow falling all about,
They needed things to fill their time.
One of them turning then to rhyme
And wrote of their experience there.
He didn't know, but that is where
The true gold lay, for words are wealth
And not injurious to your health!
He'd found his calling, he could see,
For famous he was meant to be!

Dear Joyce:  This is VERY loosely based on the early years of Robert Service. also on a diary kept by one of will's ancestors.
Thanks for commenting Joyce.
