A Cow Named Chris

My sister lived out in the wood.
She liked it there and found she could
Do all the things that needed done
Without the help of anyone.
She had a cow for company.
Most folks have dogs, but one day she
Had found a calf stuck in a slough.
She took him home and there he grew
Into a large and friendly pet.
She named him Chris, though I forget
Just what it was that sparked that name.
She'd call him and he always came
To get the treats she handed out.
It was fun having him about!

Upon her knees, she scrubbed her floors
And then continued out of doors,
Down several steps, before she rose.
One day, she did so and then froze.
Ten feet away, a cougar lay.
He snarled and stood, but in his way
A big, black cow came bellowing
And at the same time, she did fling
Scrub water, which drenched that mad cat,
To let him know with no doubt, that,
He'd met a pair who'd not allow
Him to harm that girl or cow!

He took off bounding for the brush
And right behind him, in a rush,
Came Chris, with noises that would scare
Most anything that lived out there.
Of course my sister thought that he
Was wonderful and I agree!

How wonderful.  It is amazing how every animal has such potential and to think we eat them.  Hurrah for your sister and her cow named Chris.  Love, Joyce

Dear Joyce:  My sister was a braver soul than I, living in the woods by herself. We never realized how stalwart a friend a cow could be, until this happened.

Thanks!

Your talent demonstrates the power of love.
What a wonderful poem (as if you would create anything any less).

Deaqr Marge:  This was my youngest sister I wrote about and she was an intrepid soul! The pioneer blood must have flowed strongly in her veins. She was fiercely independent and thought she could do anything and she did a lot, before dying at an early age.
