Covered Sled

I remember how it felt to be
Roused from a cozy bed;
To be driven to our country school
In the big covered sled.

Daddy hitched it to his favorite team,
His powerful Prince and Teddy.
With drifts of snow where cars can't go
That valiant pair was ready.

We had a little kerosene stove
And robes so thick and warm;
To keep us from our death of cold
In those few miles from the farm.

There was no need to be worried,
Our dad would get us there;
Snug and safe in our little rig
Pulled by that faithful pair.

It sits in a museum now,
The covered, winter sled
And most of the kids who rode in it
And that big team are dead.

Daddy is in Heaven where
He battles snow no more;
And only a few to remember how
Life was in days of yore.

Dear Joyce:

I actually rode in one of these the year I went to a one-roomed country school in Alberta. My uncle and dad built it for my cousin and I to drive the three miles to school.  Like yours it had a little heater and a big window across the front with two holes underneath it for the reins to come through to control the horses.  We had skis on it and we thought it was the equivalent of a limousine!  Boy I am flooded with sweet memories after reading your poem! Great job on it!

Love
