She was tall, my mother,
and dark as a wine-stain.
An Irish beauty with Spanish looks,
hair black as midnight
and gypsy-brown eyes.

I remember her endless patience
with my various faults--her sorrow
when I stepped over the line; her tears
when I broke her heart; her smile
when I mended it again.

There were family hardships too
as time swallowed the years:
quarrels with my father, money worries
and ill-health as nature took its toll
and the light in her gypsy eyes faded.

Now she's gone: three years after
my father's death she gave up the ghost,
tired and disillusioned by life's travails.
I miss her sorely--she who gave me
life, love and mixed memories.

Bill~
There are so many beautiful memories wrapped in your thoughts~
This truly was a sort of portraiture of one who must have been such a remarkable lady~

You have touched me very tenderly~

I hope that she knew you were a word-artist~

Thank you both, Martyjo and Marge, for your kind responses to this one. Yes, she was a remarkable lady--oddly enough, it took me 16 years before I felt able to write this poem. I hope I've done justice to her memory.

Regards,
Bill

What wonderful memories you have to savour.
A beautiful tribute to the one who gave you life and love.
I'm sure she is smiling down at you.
Well done!

Hi Bill:  You have penned a lovely picture of your mother. Sometimes, it takes a long time to talk about such a sadness, or write about it. I'm glad you could now!

Very moving - I really liked it - particularly the "dark as a wine-stain" phrase, really made the picture "pop out."
