Superstition

I tie the red rag around
The gnarled branch of tree
I step over cracks in
Concrete mapped beneath me

My fingers are knotted in
A cross of desperation
My eyes screwed tight shut
Body lost of all sensation

I count the cars that pass
I touch each lamp post quick
I touch it once again
Just incase it was a trick

I turn the corner with dread
Expecting the worst to come
My flesh prickles with uncertainty
Blood beating like a drum

Both feet touch each step
With a double checked tread
I roll to face the wall
When i lie sweating in bed

All the numbers must be even
Every line must meet another
What must be worth this trouble
What must be worth this bother?

I call it superstition
I says its just to be sure
I tell myself it's for luck
When i count tiles on the floor

But i know that through these lies
The if's and buts and mights
I know deep and deeper down
That something isn't right

This isn't superstition.
