streets littered with the foul,
covered up by the innocence of the young.
the mind of a child not allowing it to see
the rotting corpses of America's youth.
a mother trying to protect her only daughter
from the evil that is forever spreading
from city street to city street.
the virus leaking from one to another.
she tells her "be careful.
come home right after school.
tell me where you go and when you'll be home."
the girl scoffs. "what am I, five? "
she defies her mothers orders,
but only slightly at first
so that the change can go undetected.
the change that even she does not know of.
the virus is taking hold.
old friends introduce her to new friends,
some smothered with the stench of rotting corpses.
they all have a friend in common.
the virus.
she grins at the thought of it.
a new way to disobey her mother, to push away,
to get trapped deeper in the city underground.
it entices her, infuses with her mind.
over shadows who she is,
melting her away from the inside, out.
the mother starts to notice the change.
how the late nights keep getting later
until she just doesn't come home at all.
how the back talk keeps getting worse,
and the important things keep getting ignored.
"things have to change. no more going out."
the daughter wont hear it.
she hasn't done anything wrong.
"stop treating me like a child"
she runs, back into the deep dark jungle
that has welcomed her so well.
the jungle that all sane minds keep away from.
hours, days, weeks pass
but she doesn't return to the sanctity
that she so foolishly tossed aside.
shes just another zombie
with a soul sold to the dark streets,
and a mother left weeping
at the loss of her child.

Catie!! This is awesome! It's so vivid and enticing. It's been up for what, three days, and nobody has posted to it? People in Open Poetry post :p don't worry, I will always post for you, my Catie-dearest, and make you smile at my random comments such as "The fleas were gone, and now they are back, doesn't that suck, I hope one isnt on my face" or such. Have a great day!
