This poem was written for one of my friends, and it covers a topic that I find is not often addressed in schools. To understand the poem you have to know a little bit more than is written. Also, the poem is written in 1st person, which is a bit odd since it's about someone else, but I think it allowed me to look through her eyes for a moment.
My friend lives with alopecia areata, which is a disease which makes her hair fall out. I've seen her suffer every day with it and she is possibly the strongest person I know, she has a wonderful personality but people never really see her beyond her looks. So Emma, this one's for you.
-------------------------------------------
The Few

So I have alopecia,
What's it to you?
As if my feelings
Are important to you.
You only want
To have a laugh,
And take a dig
On your own behalf.
Does hurting me
Bring pleasure,
If so, please
At your own leisure.
As if I have feelings
I'm not the same,
Just sneer and laugh
And bring more pain.
You never look
Beyond my shell,
At the torment within
My own personal hell.
Im breaking, tearing
At the seams,
My head's exploding
With silent screams.
Any second now
And I shall burst,
From this life
Of mine, so cursed.
All the tales
You love to spout,
Just because
My hair falls out.
If you were me
If you could know,
Through all the obsticales
I must go.
Would you wish
You were dead,
Lying on white sheets
Stained with red.
If you were me
Would you know
Through all the pain
I must go.
So I have alopecia
What's it to you?
You're the many
I am the few.

I am a broken toy,
Of no use to anyone,
But if you fix me up,
I'm sure we'll have some fun.

The last couple of lines are especially striking.
Hope your friend feels better and people are nice to her!
