It’s Been 3 Months

It’s been 3 months after the last shot was heard
And in the quiet of my night those memories burn still
It’s been 3 months with no more bullets, no more tanks, no more war
I find myself at home with New England’s winter chill.

I pity those who’s still at war so far from home
With wives and girlfriends by themselves with mistletoe
But better them that still have something to believe
Than I that lost what I needed to live.

I did my time and I enjoyed it like I could
It’s been 3 months after my war and it won’t stop
It’s been 3 months and I still lay awake at night
Remembering the times I had to stand and fight.

But fighting the Iraqis was not one of my concerns
But the fighting with my mind gnawed slowly at my soul
3 months ago was the last shot heard
It seems the war followed me back home.

In the midst of heat and hunger, fighting and fatigue
The thought of HER kept body and mind from becoming weak
It’s been 3 months, no bullets flying, no explosions
Not long enough to heal the wounds in my emotions.

Just a soldier, just a boy, so far away
Just one thought kept me alive for this today
Just a war, nothing more, what can I say
It’s been 3 months and I can’t get it out of my head.

In the blood soaked battle field, bleach the bones of countless millions who in the midst of victory stopped to rest, and resting they died.

You know como, I've heard it all. The view from wives, the view of children, the view of myself, being a niece. Knowing someone was out there, someone linked by blood to you. I've heard the father's side, and the mother's I've read of heros and so many more, but I've never heard from a solider himself. I liked it, I feel a bit more connected to it.

just a thouhgt, my grandparents "feared" germans, my parents "feared" russians, and i "fear" iraqies. i wonder whom my children will look to and say- i "fear" what they may do. just a passing thought. . .
