“Black”

I’m seeking comfort
I know not why
Only I know that if I didn’t
I would cry

Simple pretty words
On a simple pretty page
Are let loose to the white
Out of their black cage

Yet I find I want to feel like this
Better than normal numb
Soaking up the pain
I like to feel brave instead of dumb

And one word I write catches my eye
I haven’t thought of him for weeks
And yet the sting is fresh
Thought not as sharp as its peaks

It’s enough to make me hurt
Though, not to make me bleed
Why this memory, why right now
A simple and silly harmless deed

The word “black” catches at me
What he would type instead of “back”
And I’d always sweetly tease
Now the word is a freezing slap

"I thought I'd just mention in passing . . . I always wanted a Sparkly of my very own." -Jeremy The Crow
