I recently took a trip to visit my youngest daughter...to spend some time with her, to be 'Daddy' and do daddy & daughter things.  She took me to the military park where my father was buried (he died 2 years ago on my birthday & I've never been able to visit his grave.)  These are some thoughts from that post-Memorial Day visit.

I found myself standing there being brave
for a little girl gone grown
I found myself standing there
wondering where the time had flown
I found myself standing there
at papa's grave site almost alone

I fought the tears of first response battling
like a warrior strong in conflict's air
I fought the tears of first response
wondering if life had been truly fair
I fought the tears of first response
as I stood looking at the solemn there

Row upon row, stone saluting stone
half-mast flags in memoriam shown

I fought the tears of first response
as I found myself...while standing there

Intense, and beautifully tender.
Thank you for sharing this personal, emotional moment of discovery.

I know how hard it is to sit at the grave of a loved one, and remember all that you miss.

It makes it hard, yet we go to keep that part of their lives a part of ours, if only by spending a brief moment at a stone in a cemetary.

Peace be yours, Enjoyed your poem.
Tracey.

Midnitesun
thank you so much for the very generous comments.  I am so glad that you took the time to read and leave a reply...your words were much appreciated...

Bobby,
glad you liked it, and yes, the visit was much needed and personally refreshing and empowering...thanks for asking

Tracey,
we all grieve in our own special ways...just never thought that it would have been such a powerfully overwhelming experience, as he is with me always in words, thoughts, and deeds...

Verve,
thank you for your comments...my condolences on your loss...nothing ever eases the pain, does it...

A sad poem Steave but you wrote it well.
It's always a shock when we loose a loved

one but I know you will feel a great sense of relief having seen your Dad's gravesite
with your daughter. Take care my friend.

stevenr - I remember too. We stand there at the grave site of a loved one with a deep sadness for their departure. And somehow when we leave, we're thankful for the life and living memories they've given us to continue another day. Thanks for writing this stevenr. Namyh
